Erotic Romance vs. Erotica

For some it is an important distinction. As a writer it makes a difference in how I write. As a reader it makes a difference in my expectations which can make a HUGE difference in my reaction to a book.

Here’s my basic breakdown.

It can be difficult to distinguish between the two at a glance. As a writer I think one of the keys is plot. When writing erotic romance the plot must focus on the relationship between the main characters, and the sex must be an important part of the journey. If you took away the sex the story would be incomplete. In erotica, the sex is the story.

Can you tell the difference?

Excerpt #1

She advanced again, following his direction. He slipped into the upper section of her esophagus, stretching it with a tight almost burning sensation that couldn't be described as painful. More like mild discomfort. And, to her satisfaction, he fit entirely in her mouth. She retreated to gather a breath and then repeated the motion.

He groaned and drove even deeper. “God damn. Take it all,” he demanded as he pumped his hips into her face. She needed to back away, but he had his fingers tangled in her hair, holding her in place. Pinned between his crotch and his grasp he controlled her. Letting her face come up he withdrew and allowed her to inhale. “Again, baby. That felt so fucking good.”

Despite the tears streaming from her eyes, she wanted to give him the pleasure he requested. There was no time to examine why, but some need to please him had her opening her jaw and taking him again. He slid balls deep again and fucked her face with his palm on her head. Periodically he would let her up to pant, until she incorporated the suction she had once read about.

After she included the nuance, he cried out, “Oh, fuck yeah. I’m going to come, baby.”

His balls drew up against her chin as he ground into her then he pistoned in and out as he exploded in her mouth. She swallowed as much as she could, but a glop dribbled down her chin. She scooped it up and licked it off her fingers.

His breath caught.

Excerpt #2

Up and down she rode him while the dragon’s tongue rubbed her swollen bud over and over with each stroke of his cock. She impaled herself on him and ground against the jade sex toy until her body shattered, seeming to fragment in a million pieces. She pumped his shaft, letting her body clench around him until he too joined her in release. He called her name as he pumped into her, meeting her stroke for stroke. A second orgasm ripped through her, less intense, but just as satisfying as her first.

Slumped over him, awareness returned and she lifted off his shaft, removed the ring, and the spent sheath from him. He sat boneless in the chair and stared at her.

Shaken from such an intense orgasm, Jonathan found it hard to believe the pleasure she had shown him. He had not imagined sex being so explosive with anyone. His whole perception of the world and the principles he tried to live by shifted with the experience. How could that ever be wrong? With Marie, it seemed so right, so beautiful. How could there be anything evil in what they had shared? Nothing that brought so much pleasure could be wrong.

“Thank you for sharing this with me.” He couldn’t wipe the grin from his face.

“You’re welcome. We can certainly use it whenever you would like.” She had cleaned the semiprecious mineral and placed it back into the box. Then, in short order, she replaced her robe and refreshed his brandy from the decanter on a small table. Her drink also refilled, she sat across from him and they talked of life and how they each had arrived where they were.

Much time, and a few more orgasms, later he departed The Market a happy man. She had shared a bit of her world with him, and despite the path her life had taken, and her rather spurious claims, the woman and the girl he knew were not so very different.

So, which was which, and why? There’s no wrong answer, but I will share what I think below and one lucky reader who comments on my blog will be randomly selected to win their choice of a Decadent ebook. Good luck!

Answer

Excerpt #1 is erotica and Excerpt #2 is Erotic Romance. In the first there is certainly attraction, desire, lust, and even curiosity. But there isn’t a real emotional attachment between the two characters. Not like you see in the second excerpt. There you get the sense of connection and that something more is going on than just sex.

That was fun! Want to read more from one (or both, don’t be shy!) of the stories? Here is the blurb, cover, and buy links for each.
