Ten Reasons to Give Amish Fiction a Try

by Suzanne Woods Fisher

www.suzannewoodsfisher.com

Be honest. Do you shudder at the thought of reading a “buggy and bonnet” book? Or assume that the readers of Amish fiction are sweet little grannies in nursing homes?

Here’s a few things that might surprise you: Amish fiction has become an industry leader for the Christian publishing market, with no signs of waning. During the recession, while large bookstore chains were shutting their doors and publishing houses were scaling back, agents and editors continued to seek Amish fiction. Nearly every Christian publisher is racing to the market with an author or two who writes Amish fiction. This sub-genre is continuing to grow. And grow and grow.

But let’s get back to you. Why should you give a book of Amish fiction a try? What’s the fuss all about? After all, there must be some reasons Amish fiction is so popular.

So here’s ten of them. Ten reasons why you should bother to give Amish fiction a try.

1) Chaste ...

A ROMANCE WITH WORDS by Ann H. Gabhart

“Words are the voice of the heart.” (Confucius)

I fell in love with words as soon as I learned my abc’s and figured out how to rearrange
them to make words to write down stories. Since I was just a kid when I picked up the pen,
my first stories didn’t have anything to do with romance. At that age, adventure and mystery
seemed the key, but it wasn’t long before I began having romantic thoughts about love. And
reading love stories – still with some of that mystery threaded into the stories or set in
some fantastic historical backgrounds, but romance became a very necessary ingredient in my
stories and my life.

Words didn’t let me down. I filled up notebook after notebook with my scribbled stories as my
imaginary people added love to their fictional adventures. Romance can add zing to our everyday
lives and the same is true with the stories we read and write. We like to read about people falling

Fantasy / Futuristic / Paranormal - A Little Night Magic by Lucy March -

Hi, everyone. My name is Lucy, and I wrote a book. It’s called A Little Night Magic, and it’s about magic, friendship, waffle houses, small towns, big love, and crazy people wanting more power than is really good for them.

Or, you know, anyone.

I find questions of power really interesting. I have come to the conclusion that the only people who should have power are the ones who don’t want it. In the real world, unfortunately, the only people who hang on long enough in the endless battles for power are the ones who want it the most, and are willing to sacrifice the most of their souls to do it. However, I thought it might be fun to write about someone who absolutely didn’t want power, and thus is the one person who should have it.
